MH Department continues to improve amidst challenges

We at the Materials Handling (MH) department have continued our year by focusing on our Key Performance Indicators (KPI). Most important of these is our times for vessel unloading and how we have steadily improved throughout the year.

Consider the following achievements:

  • We have despatched 25 of the 35 vessels unloaded this year and that’s including 18 consecutive vessels unloaded in dispatch.
  • Our discharge rate has increased from the 1st and 2nd quarters of 2023 from 18,770 MT/day average to 24,763 MT/day.
  • Our unloading equipment availability has increased from an average of 69% for the 1st and 2nd quarters to over 85% in the 3rd quarter.
  • We have had our fastest vessel discharge of 2.54 days during the 3rd quarter.
  • We have had our highest average discharge rate of 28,841 MT/day during the 3rd quarter.
  • All shift groups have now cleaned and emptied all 7 hatches in a 12-hour shift with one group completing it in only 9 hours.

These are fantastic records that we have set and are a great testament to the shared teamwork between shift groups and other departments that have helped us achieve these accomplishments.

Our Department Performance Compact (DPC) is looking healthy. Our supervisors have done well in any occurrence investigation and are also closing out corrective actions which has returned high scores for our DPC. This has given us a score of 3.51 at the end of the 3rd quarter, but this does not include uncalculated scores from RAD and HR which will come in at the end of the year, so these have so far been calculated as a score of 1, to manage our expectations better.

We have also been working on our core duties and managing our coal stockpile. Every shift has been instrumental in managing the easement of the stockpile, clearing spillages, and pushing coal to make space for unloading coal vessels.
